Identification of cause and effect relationships among barriers of Industry 4.0 using decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method

Abstract: PurposeIndustry 4.0 is regarded as a modern industrial phase wherein convergence between horizontal and vertical production systems, along with their interactions, would enable industries to obtain excellent industrial efficiency. This research thus explores the barriers relevant to Industry 4.0 and their cause and effect relations using the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) technique, and this will assist in the implementation of Industry 4.0 in manufacturing industries.Design/methodol… Show more

“…However, the researchers agree that the investigation of barriers related to i4.0 implementation remains unexplored in the extant literature [ 8 , 22 , 32 , 34 ]. Therefore, the discussion of such challenges or barriers to i4.0 will be presented here because understanding these barriers is important in implementing emerging and digital manufacturing technologies [ 35 ].…”

“…The manufacturing sector has picked up Industry 4.0 adoption at a faster pace to improve industrial efficiency. However, there are barriers to the convergence of vertical and horizontal production systems such as lack of technology readiness and cost of implementations (Nimawat and Gidwani, 2021). To some extent, RPA helps in improved interactions in the transformation journey.…”

“…They note that to achieve a more efficient integration between logistics systems and the physical Internet, significant investments must be made in material handling facilities, transportation assets and intelligence-based systems. An empirical study by Nimawat and Gidwani (2021) concludes that high investment costs pose a critical barrier for manufacturers pursuing Industry 4.0.…”
