Identification of cross-reactive antigens between Mycoplasma pulmonis and Mycoplasma arthritidis

Abstract: Serological cross-reactivity between Mycoplasma pulmonis and Mycoplasma arthriditis was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunoanalysis of electrophoretic blots, and protein A immunoprecipitation reactions. The results demonstrate that one-way cross-reactivity was present in both hyperimmunized and naturally infected rats and that the predominant cross-reactive antigens were M. pulmonis surface proteins. Distinct immunoblot patterns were demonstrated for M. pulmonis and M. arthriditis, allowi… Show more

“…In fact, it is well known that M. pneumoniae has antigenic components similar to those of certain bacteria, to some animal and human tissues (1,11), and even to glycolipids from parsnips, carrots and spinach (11). Furthermore, it has recently been demonstrated by ELISA and other methods that mycoplasmas have cross-reactive antigens among some species of mycoplasmas (5,8,10). Using ELISA and immunoblotting, we also confirmed the existence of cross-reactive antibodies to mycoplasmas in the sera of patients infected with M. pneumoniae (manuscript in preparation).…”

“…Additional dilutions were not possible because of volume limitations. Samples were tested for the presence of specific antibody by a microtiter ELISA as described previously (14). Flatbottomed microtiter wells were coated with 0.2 ml of M. pulmonis antigen (10 p,g of protein per ml).…”
