Identification of eddy-induced chlorophyll in the Northeastern Natuna Sea

Abstract: We detected a robust cyclonic eddy in the northeastern Natuna Island in the Northwest Monsoon during an extremely negative El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) period (i.e., extreme La Niña event) using the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) reanalysis results. In the intense La Niña event from 1999 to 2001, we also found an increase in the abundance of chlorophyll coincided with the eddy strength pattern using the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data. Furthermore, this chl… Show more

“…To know which parameters from SST, SSS, SSC, Wind Anomaly, and Precipitation may contribute to the 2022 negative IOD development, this study correlated to those parameters using a statistical method called Pearson correlation [10,11]. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) can be estimated by using this formula:…”

“…where 𝑛 is the size of the time-series of parameters for 𝑥 𝑖 and 𝑦 𝑖 (𝑖 = 1, … , 𝑛), 𝑥̅ and 𝑦 ̅ are the sample means of parameters 𝑥 and 𝑦. In this case, the relationship between the time-series of two parameters, between precipitation and SST, was indicated by the correlation that can be quantified by a value ranging between −1 and +1, in which 0 is no correlation and +1 indicates perfect positive correlation [10,11]. This method is also applied to other parameters to see how strong their relationships.…”
