Identification of glycoproteins in mucous cells of the gill epithelium of Colossoma macropomum after exposure to organophosphate

Abstract: Identification of glycoproteins in mucous cells of the gill epithelium ABSTRACTThe use of organophosphates has been recommended for fish, especially the trichlorfon to control parasites. Colossoma macropomum were exposed to trichlorfon during 96 hours and of total number of mucous cells decreased in the number of cells when compared to the control group. Glycoproteins acid, acid sulphated and neutral was identified in the gill epithelium. Neutra glycoprotein had a significant decrease between control and the s… Show more

“…The fish mucin also contains lectins, lysozymes, complement proteins, pentraxins, immunoglobulin M (IgM), and antibacterial peptides, which play an essential role in the prevention of the pathogens’ invasion (Shephard, 1994). Moreover, the mucus inhibits the colonization of microorganisms as well as the entry of metazoan parasites (Moron et al, 2018).…”

“…These responses are essential to facilitate gas exchange by shortening the diffusion distance and increasing the residence time of blood on the respiratory surface. The mucous, produced by mucous cells, cover the skin, the gills and the gastrointestinal tract and is involved in nonspecific immune defensive mechanisms, as it contains several antimicrobial and possibly antiparasitic compounds (Rubio‐Godoy, 2010), giving protection against abrasive injuries by solid material suspended in water, pathogenic bacteria, and parasites (Dezfuli, Giari, Konecny, Jaeger, & Manera, 2003; Moron, de Andrade, & Fernandes, 2009; Moron, Matos, Ramos, & Gomes, 2018). The continuous presence of suspended solids in biofloc systems could activate the innate immune response in fish producing an inflammatory response in gill mucous cells increasing mucous production and reducing the presence of monogeneans in biofloc treatments.…”
