Identification of Paramyrothecium foliicola causing crater rot in eggplant and its potential hosts under controlled conditions

Abstract: Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is one of the most economically important vegetable crops cultivated and consumed globally. It is predominantly produced in Asia (94%) (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (2020)). Eggplant production is highly profitable and a ready source of income for small, resourcepoor farmers (Francisco et al., 2012). Eggplant is the most produced vegetable (by volume) in the Philippines, accounting for more than 30% of the country's total vegetable production (PSA (2020))… Show more

“…On the other hand, Commelina benghalensis and Glycine max were susceptible to all isolates. These results are similar to those of Rennberger and Keinath [ 11 ] and Aumentado and Balendres [ 12 ], in which Parammyrothecium species were able to infect original and non-original hosts within the same family (host shift ability) and different families (host jump ability).…”

“…Rennberger and Keinath [ 11 ] isolated P. foliicola and P. humicola from watermelon and two other cucurbits and confirmed their pathogenicity on watermelons, tomatoes, and southern peas. Aumentado and Balendres [ 12 ] reported P. foliicola causing crater rot in eggplant and 45 plant species from 21 plant families and were tested for the pathogenicity on detached fruit or leaf assays. Furthermore, P. foliicola is pathogenic to cucumber seedlings and watermelon, causing stem canker [ 13 ].…”

“…Detached leaf assays were performed following the method used by Aumentado and Balendres (2022b) to determine the pathogenicity of Corynespora cassiicola MBEPFR02 to 36 plant species representing 10 plant families (Table 1). Leaves were sterilized by soaking in 10% sodium hypochlorite solution, washed three times with sterilized distilled water, and air‐dried.…”

“…Paramyrothecium foliicola has been reported attacking different unrelated hosts in several countries. Recent examples are: on eggplant in the Philippines (Aumentado and Balendres 2022), on watermelon in Mexico (Cruz-Lachica et al 2021), and tomato in China (Huo et al 2022). Besides that, cross-inoculations of P. foliicola have indicated that this species is a polyphagous fungal pathogen capable of infecting unrelated crop plants such as lettuce, coffee, and soybean (Matić et al 2019;Withee et al 2022).…”
