Identification of Intermediates in the Photolysis of Mercaptans in Dilute Glass Matrices. II

Abstract: Dilute solutions of aliphatic thiols have been prepared and photolyzed at 253.7 nm in 3-methylpentane glasses at 77°K. The major products formed initially are thiyl radicals RS• and hydrogen atoms. Both of these are hot and yield solvent radicals by abstraction reactions, and relatively small amounts of RS2•, RS•, and possibly R1R2C=S. Thermal annealing of the matrices is accompanied by loss of hydrocarbon radicals through cage reactions and concommitant increase in the RS• concentration. An intermediate radic… Show more

“…It is virtually identical to the six line proton hyperfine spectrum obtained by photolysis of any of the dilute (0.01 mol dm-3) alkyl thiol-3MP or H,S-3MP glasses studied in ref. 3, and is accordingly assigned to the solvent radical M.. In this particular instance n-Pr would have been expected (13) to give rise to a 1 : 3 : 4 : 4 : 3 : 1 sextet, compared to the 1:9:19.5: 19.7: 11.5: 1.75 sextet obtained here.…”

“…The general procedures have been described earlier (6,7) and are analogous to those used in photolysis experiments. The solvents were purified by passage through activated silica gel columns and freshly distilled before use.…”

Radiolysis was carried .out using aoCo ?-rays in a Gammacell 220 from Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. at a dose rate of 3.8 X 1016eV g-1 min-1. The photolytic procedures have been described elsewhere (10) as has the epr spectrometer used ( I I).…”
