Identification of Intermetallic Compounds and Its Formation Mechanism in Boron Steel Hot-Dipped in Al-7 wt.% Mn Alloy

Abstract: Abstract:In laser welding and hot stamping Al-Si-coated boron steel, there is a problem that the strength of the joint is lowered due to ferrite formation in the fusion zone. The purpose of this study is to develop an Al-7 wt.% Mn hot-dip coating in which Mn, an austenite stabilizing element, replaces the ferrite stabilizing element Si. The nucleation and formation mechanism of the reaction layer was studied in detail by varying the dipping time between 0 and 120 s at 773 • C. The microstructure and phase cons… Show more

“…According to the EDS analyses, the compositions of Al 3 Fe (Al 57.76 and Fe 18.84 wt%), Al 2 O 3 (Al 29.10 and O 45.15 wt%), and Al 2 Fe 3 Si 4 (Al 20.5, Fe 30.76, and Si 41.25 wt%) at number 4, 5, and 6 were detected, respectively, which were also confirmed by XRD pattern. This analysis is also in agreement with previous researches [ 34 , 35 , 36 ].…”

“…The EDX analysis results from six areas of Al-30Fe 3 O 4 -20SiC sample surfaces, which are shown in Figure 4, are presented in Figure 5 , and 6 were detected, respectively, which were also confirmed by XRD pattern. This analysis is also in agreement with previous researches [34][35][36].…”

“…The ζ phase was not observed because it is smaller than the β phase. According to a previous study on a steel coated with Al alloy through the hot dipping process [26][27][28][29], the κ (Fe 3 AlC) phase was formed because Al atoms in liquid Al and C atoms emitted from the η phase, which barely features C, and diffuses preferentially along the grain boundary.…”

“…However, low surface hardness usually causes surface abrasion and accelerates corrosion when used in harsh conditions of high speed, heavy load for long time [1][2][3]. Generally, surface modification technology is applied to improve the surface property of the low-carbon steels [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Plasma transferred arc (PTA) welding which uses high-energy plasma arc as heat source for coating of a hardfacing layer on the material surface is considered as an effective method to increase surface hardness and improve wear resistance of the steels.…”
