This article aims to identify the basic geometric structures found in the illumination of the Terengganu Quran Manuscript (L.M.N.T 2002.1) collection. The study focuses on the appreciation of art, employing a formalistic approach to visually examine the evident basic geometric structures present in the illumination of the Quran Manuscript (L.M.N.T 2002.1). The research methodology involved observing the illumination of the Quran Manuscript (L.M.N.T 2002.1) and analysing the basic geometric structures based on formalistic aspects such as elements of art and principles of design through formalistic visual analysis using Adobe Illustrator software. In general, the illumination image displays the shape of a rosette or medallion. This character is also viewed from the perspective of cosmology, whereby it is a resemblance of a glowing star and the shining sun. This is appropriate with the concept of lighting or Shamsa. The findings of this research indicated some views on basic geometry in the illumination of the Quran Manuscript (L.M.N.T 2002.1) as an introduction to new knowledge in the field of art in general.

This study focuses on the works of Hashim Hassan paintings. The artist is known for showcasing the essence of the Malay socio-cultural and philosophy that is in-depth within the community. The scope of the study is his natural, conventional subject matters and the intrinsic meaning of the paintings. Regarding the philosophical and Malay socio-cultural meaning of Wau Bulan Terbang Malam, the painting resonates with the classic Malay song, Engkau Laksana Bulan, by Tan Sri. P. Ramlee. The painting has also been an inspiration from subject matter the Malay banknotes and coins and the graphic design logo of Malaysia Airlines Berhad. Woodcarving motifs, including Negeri Sembilan, are significant in Malaysian art, bearing ancient knowledge and latent meanings. However, the understanding of Malay woodcarving motifs in Kuala Pilah is relatively limited compared to the east coast. The urgency to study these motifs intensifies as urbanization rapidly changes the landscape, representing not only woodcarvers’ skills but also profound cultural symbolism. This paper aims to interpret the meanings within these motifs in traditional Malay houses in Kuala Pilah, employing qualitative methods such as observation, interviews, photographic records, and secondary data analysis alongside Ferdinand de Saussure’s Semiotics Theory for analysis. The cultural and social significance embedded in these motifs is unveiled through signifier and signified analysis. The results revealed the presence of various motifs encompassing geometry, fauna, flora, and still life. The study also uncovered that each motif plays a pivotal role in conveying the cultural and social values of the Malay people in Negeri Sembilan and enhances our understanding of the traditional art form of woodcarving amidst contemporary transformations.
