Identification of microRNA‐96‐5p as a postoperative, prognostic microRNA predictor in nonviral hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Aim:The microRNA (miR) clusters miR-183/96/182 and miR-217/216a/216b are significantly upregulated in nonviral hepatocellular carcinoma (NBNC-HCC).

“…5 It has been thought that the advent of the ability to control hepatitis B, and virtually eradicate hepatitis C would reduce hepatocellular carcinoma but in reality, the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma has not decreased much in Japan, due to a rapid increase in non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma cases caused by lifestylerelated diseases. 2 In this study, Matsui et al 6 identified microRNAs that are upregulated in cancerous tissues compared to non-cancerous tissues in non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma (NBNC-HCC), and also clarified the clinical significance of microRNAs that are upregulated in cancerous tissues.…”

“…Judging from the number of F I G U R E 1 Total 57 002 articles were found using two key words, "cancer" and "microRNA" in PubMed from 2003 to November 4, 2001. A similar search using the terms "microRNA" and "hepatocellular carcinoma" found 5642 articles published from 2006 to November 4, 2021 [Colour figure can be viewed at wileyonlinelibrary.com] papers on cancer and microRNAs, including hepatocellular carcinoma, is a field in which many researchers are interested, and the study by Matasui et al 6 is timely in this respect.…”

“…MiR-182-5p has been validated to have an essential role in liver-related diseases. MiR-182-5p is a high-priority miRNA in HCC, and is closely associated with early recurrence and overall survival in patients ( 21 , 22 ). Numerous studies have shown that miR-182-5p is dramatically overexpressed in HCC and could enhance the ability of migration, invasion, adhesion and proliferation of HCC cells via repressing multiple targeting genes, such as FOXO3a ( 21 ), Hepatitis C virus p7 trans-regulated protein 3 (P7TP3) ( 23 ), and regulator of calcineurin 1 (RCAN1) ( 24 ).…”
