Identification of Pathogenic and Opportunistic Yeasts in Pigeon Excreta by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry and Their Prevalence in Chon Buri Province, Thailand

Abstract: Pigeon excreta can cause environmental and public health issues, particularly in urban and public areas. They are reservoirs of several human pathogens including fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Epidemiological data of pathogenic and opportunistic yeasts in pigeon droppings in Chon Buri, one of the most reputable tourist cities of Thailand, are scarce. The present study aimed to identify yeasts in pigeon droppings by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and to study their prevalence in Chon Buri, Thailand. A total of 200… Show more

“…MALDI-TOF is routinely used in the diagnosis and research of pathogens in humans [ 45 ], but with veterinary isolates, it has been more focused on isolates from foods of animal origins [ 46 ] or detecting contaminants from animal excreta [ 47 ] and for research purposes [ 37 ] rather than for diagnosis. In this research, MALDI-TOF was a fair method to correct species with similar biochemical profiles given by Vitek, like C. ciferii vs. M. gulliermondii , G. klebahanii vs. G. candidum , R. glutinis vs. R. mucilaginosa and Trichosporon sp.…”

“…Infections caused by opportunistic pathogenic fungi, especially species of the genus Candida , Cryptococcus neoformans and Aspergillus fumigatus , are a serious medical problem, especially in immunocompromised patients, and their incidence has been increasing significantly in recent years [ 18 ]. Few antifungal agents are available for treating systemic mycoses, which include mainly polyenes, allylamines, azoles, fluoropyrimidines and echinocandins, which have different mechanisms of action [ 19 ].…”

“…On day 17, after chemotherapy, the fever and skin lesions improved. Blood culture from the peripherally inserted central venous catheter and catheter tip culture yielded Trichosporon asahii (MALDI-TOF MS; score 2.30) (3,4) but nothing from the peripheral line. We also performed 18s rRNA gene PCR from isolated fungal colonies and identified them as T. asahii (GenBank accession no.…”
