Identification of possible dioxin emission reduction strategies in pre-existing iron ore sinter plants

Abstract: The present paper is a result of a research project aimed at limiting the environmental impact of an Italian ironmaking plant. The present study is focused on the sinter plant in view of formulating effective structural, managerial and behavioural practices with regard to the identification and application of the best available techniques (BAT) in accordance with the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control directive 96/61/EC. After a brief description of the plant under study, the most recent and most sign… Show more

“…Dioxins: sintering has been recognized as an important source of organic micro-pollutants such as PCDDs and PCDFs [7,[60][61][62][63]. The mechanism of PCDD and PCDF formation in sinter plants is complex and associated to a de novo synthesis process [64]. The range of PCDD/F emissions in the EU-25 in 2004 is from 0.15 to 14.64 μg I-TEQ/t sinter expressed on an annual average basis [7], with most plants in the range 0.2 to 6.0 μg I-TEQ/t sinter [7].…”

“…Tables 1 and 2 summarise the implications for coke plant operators, which arose from these directives. The need to fulfil such specific requirements has posed a serious challenge to the existing coke plants, which are often characterised by structural or technological limitations [5][6][7].…”

“…2 As reported in a previous paper, 3 the Servola sinter plant is equipped with end-of-pipe removal technology which is among the best available. In particular, the Wetfine wet electrostatic precipitator, installed in 2002 to limit particulate matter emissions, is also able to remove dioxins.…”
