Identification of quantitative trait loci governing early germination and seedling vigor traits related to weed competitive ability in rice

Abstract: Weed competitive ability (WCA) is vital for the improvement of grain yield under direct-seeded and aerobic rice ecosystems where weeds are a major limiting factor. Early seed germination (ESG) and early seedling vigor (ESV) are the crucial traits for WCA. This study attempted to map the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and hotspot regions governing ESG and ESV traits. A total of 167 BC1F5 selective introgression lines developed from an early backcross population involving Weed Tolerant Rice 1 (WTR-1) as the reci… Show more

“…Presently, it is practically impossible to predict the development of herbicide resistance in weed species. However, thorough understanding of the molecular basis of herbicide resistance will allow prediction of the development of resistance in weeds (Dimaano et al, 2020b). Through molecular and biotechnological methods, detailed information on the specific plant enzymes involved in detoxification of wide herbicide substrates may be attained and will be useful in predicting herbicide resistance cases.…”

“…Koso-Pol. by functional characterization of the cytochrome P450 enzymes (Dimaano et al, 2020b) and may be performed in other agronomically-important weed species by characterization of other herbicide metabolizing enzymes such as glutathione S-transferases, glycosyl transferases, etc. Furthermore, knowing the specific herbicide substrates of these metabolizing enzymes in weeds will allow proper identification of the appropriate herbicides that can be effective to control the resistant weed populations.…”

“…Therefore, weed-suppressive strategies and control methods employed in IWM are preferred. Additionally, there have been a few studies searching for QTLs for weed competitive traits in crops ( Coleman et al, 2001 ; Bharamappanavara et al, 2020 ; Dimaano et al, 2020 ). Although many of these studies have not mentioned specific genes from fine mapping, it is likely that genes involved in growth and development like maturity genes, tillering genes, and leaf development genes will be strong candidates for improvement.…”

“…Early seedling vigor is a complex trait, mainly distinguished by the rate of germination and rapid early growth of both the shoot and roots. Several seedling vigor QTLs have previously been identified with biparental populations (Cheng et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2017;Dimaano et al, 2020), recombinant inbred lines (Huang et al, 2004;Zhou et al, 2007;Xie et al, 2014;Singh et al, 2017) and association mapping studies (Dang et al, 2014;Wang et al, 2018). Seedling vigor QTLs have been detected using several different phenotypes, including germination index and germination rate (Wang et al, 2010), low-temperature vigor of germination (Najeeb et al, 2020), shoot length, root length, root number and weight of germinated seeds (Zhang et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2018;Dimaano et al, 2020).…”
