Identification of sex-determining loci in hybridizing Catostomus fish species

Abstract: Despite the near-universality of gonochorism (separate sexes) in eukaryotic organisms, the underlying mechanisms of sex determination are poorly understood and highly variable in some taxa. In hybridizing species, sex determination mechanisms may promote or impede reproductive isolation depending on whether mechanisms are similar between species. In Catostomus fishes, contemporary hybridization is variable and extensive. In the present study, we aim to describe the genetic basis of sex determination in bluehea… Show more

“…Identifying sex chromosomes can be achieved by looking for loci that are present on only one of the sex chromosomes (Gautier, 2014;Stovall et al, 2018;Feron et al, 2021;Garcia-Raventós et al, 2023), or by looking at heterozygosity and differentiation between sexes at homologous loci (e.g. Berset-Brändli et al, 2006;Brelsford et al, 2017;Käfer et al, 2021;Hearn et al, 2022; see also Pyne et al, 2022 for an association study). Here we followed the second approach (see Palmer et al, 2019 for a review of methods).…”
