Identification of SHV-Type and CTX-M-12 Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamases (ESBLs) in MultiresistantEnterobacteriaceaefrom Colombian Caribbean Hospitals

Abstract: The production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in Enterobacteriaceae is the most prevalent resistance mechanism to third-generation cephalosporins. The aim of this study was to identify the ESBLs produced in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates from two hospitals of the Colombian Caribbean Region. A total of 30 clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae (21) and E. coli (9) ESBL-producers were collected in two hospitals from January, 2001 to June, 2003. Isoelectric point values wer… Show more

“…The emergence and spread of CTX-M continues to be well documented and reported across Latin America and the Caribbean [2, 9, 23, 24]. In this study there was widespread distribution of β-lactamases belonging to the CTX-M-1 group, and one instance of an isolate with a β-lactamase from the CTX-M-2 group- the first such account of this particular enzyme in K. pneumoniae from a Caribbean territory.…”

“…1 and Supplementary Table S2. Most reports of these alleles have come from Asia, 24,52,58,65,66 with a few isolated accounts from Africa, 23 Europe, 8,34 Australia, 67 South America, 17 Russia, 45 and Canada. 1 Thus, it would appear that this study represents the first report of many CTX-M group 1 alleles in the United States.…”

“…PCR amplification for each gene was detected using the specific oligonucleotides bla CTX-M [11], bla SHV [12], and bla TLA-1 [13], which have been reported previously. In all cases, the resulting PCR products were analyzed using an automatic sequencer (ABI PRISM 377-18 kit EL: Taq FS Dye Terminator Cycle Sequencing FluorescenceBased Sequencing).…”
