Identification of SNPs within the PRLR gene and effects on maternal behavior in sheep

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The prolactin receptor gene (PRLR) plays an essential role in maternal behavior. The aim of the study was to detect PRLR mutations in exon 10, using a polymerase chain reaction-single stranded conformation polymorphism method, and to determine the association between mutations in this region with maternal behavior traits in Chinese Hu sheep. Polymorphisms were detected only in the gene region amplified by the primer P3; three genotypes (AA, AB and BB) were observed. The genotype BB was predominant in… Show more

“…241 In ewes, an exon 10 PRLR SNP was associated both with larger litter size 242 and maternal behavior. 243 In Wijian white geese, multiple SNPs in exon 10 of the PRLR gene were identified, with one haplotype being associated with more eggs produced. 244 Similarly, haplotypes reflecting 6 SNP in the chicken PRLR (5 intronic and 1 in the final exon) were associated with egg production traits including the total number of eggs laid at 300 days of age, and age at first lay.…”

“…The most notable of the mutations, g.184822G/A (p.Ser485Asn), can be associated with increased litter weight and birth weight, but not litter size 241 . In ewes, an exon 10 PRLR SNP was associated both with larger litter size 242 and maternal behavior 243 . In Wijian white geese, multiple SNPs in exon 10 of the PRLR gene were identified, with one haplotype being associated with more eggs produced 244 .…”
