Identification of the Cryptosporidium Isolate from Chickens in Japan by Sequence Analyses

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The Cryptsosporidium isolate from chickens in Japan by Itakura et al. is not yet accurately identified because of several discrepancies in phenotypic features. We attempted to identify this isolate by analyzing the partial sequences of the 18S rRNA, COWP and HSP70 genes. The chicken isolate showed nearly 100% homology in each gene with C. baileyi, but less than 91% homology with C. meleagridis. In addition, these genes were classified into the same cluster with C. baileyi other than C. meleagridis b… Show more

“…Cryptosporidium baileyi is probably the most common avian Cryptosporidium sp., and has been reported in a wide range of avian hosts including black-headed gulls, chickens, cormorants, cranes, a channel-billed toucan, an eastern golden-backed weaver, turkeys, ducks, geese, cockatiels, a brown quail, a grey-bellied bulbul, an ostrich, a red-rumped cacique, a crested oropendola, a red crowned amazon, a rose-ringed parakeet, a grey partridge and mixed-bred falcons , Pavlásek, 1993, Ryan, et al, 2003a, Abe and Iseki, 2004, Jellison, et al, 2004, Kimura et al, 2004, Chvala, et al, 2006Huber et al, 2007;Van Zeeland et al, 2008).…”

“…However, most reports on the prevalence in chickens were published in the 1980s and 1990s, with infection rates ranging from 4.5 to 50% depending on the location and the methods used in detection (de Graaf et al, 1999). In contrast, in the past 10 years there have been only about six reports (Trampel et al, 2000;Kimura et al, 2004;Huber et al, 2007;Soltane et al, 2007;Shemshadi et al, 2010;Smith et al, 2010). Likewise, there are only a few reports (about seven) concerning Cryptosporidium infections in ducks (Mason, 1986;Richter et al, 1994;O'Donoghue, 1995;Morgan et al, 2001;Kuhn et al, 2002;Huber et al, 2007;Amer et al, 2010).…”
