“…In vitro, EBV infects and transforms resting primary human B lymphocytes into continuously proliferating LCLs (Pope et al, 1968(Pope et al, , 1969reviewed in Rickinson and Kie , 1996). Recombinant EBV reverse genetic analyses in conjunction with in vitro B lymphocyte growth transformation assays have delineated the EBV genes necessary for transformation, while biochemical analyses have identi®ed cellular proteins that are involved in EBV-mediated transformation.…”

“…EBV infects resting B lymphocytes (Menezes et al, 1976;Schneider & zur Hausen, 1975) and persists in the cell in a non-productive latent state. As a consequence of the latent infection, the B lymphocytes become immortal and grow in vitro as permanent lymphoblastoid cell lines (Henle et al, 1967;Pope et al, 1969). The EBVdependent proliferation of B lymphocytes is involved in the pathogenesis of the diseases caused by EBV.…”

“…The human herpesvirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EB virus), has been implicated as the agent responsible for lymphocyte transformation in vitro (1,2). While some lymphoblastoid cell lines show persistent infection with EB virus, other longterm cell lines have remained virus-negative.…”
