Identification of the hub genes in gastric cancer through weighted gene co-expression network analysis

Abstract: Background Gastric cancer is one of the most lethal tumors and is characterized by poor prognosis and lack of effective diagnostic or therapeutic biomarkers. The aim of this study was to find hub genes serving as biomarkers in gastric cancer diagnosis and therapy. Methods GSE66229 from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) was used as training set. Genes bearing the top 25% standard deviations among all the samples in training s… Show more

“…In the human genome, STARD3 is less than 30 kilobases away from HER2 on chromosome 17. Thus, it is perhaps not surprising that STARD3 is classically co-amplified and co-expressed with HER2 in approximately 10-25% of breast cancers [79,80]. It has been shown that inducing STARD3 overexpression elevates HER2 positive breast cancer proliferation, and ablating this expression returns an opposite effect [78,81].…”

“…The genes that are highly connected with other genes in the network, called "hub" genes, are expected to be important in pathology (7). As such, many pipelines discovering driver genes incorporate information from coexpression networks and these hub genes into the next phase of multiomics approaches (8)(9)(10). It has, however, been noted that hub genes are not stable, and they are not guaranteed to be driver genes (11).…”

“…Gastric cancer is the fifth most common type of malignant tumor in the world and the third leading cause of death in cancer patients (Li et al., 2021). At present, surgical treatment is still one of the main measures to treat gastric cancer.…”
