Identification of the microbial community composition and structure of coal-mine wastewater treatment plants

Abstract: The wastewater from coal-mine industry varies greatly and is resistant to biodegradation for containing large quantities of inorganic and organic pollutants. Microorganisms in activated sludge are responsible for the pollutants' removal, whereas the microbial community composition and structure are far from understood. In the present study, the sludges from five coal-mine wastewater treatment plants were collected and the microbial communities were analyzed by Illumina high-throughput sequencing. The diversiti… Show more

“…Both the genus Thiobacillus and the genus Flavobacterium are composed of denitrifying bacteria. The genus Thiobacillus are the main degraders of thiocyanate, have a strong denitrification capacity, and are commonly used in coking wastewater treatment . The genus Flavobacterium is able to perform heterotrophic nitrification and metabolize refractory organics under elevated dissolved oxygen .…”

“…Alphaproteobacteria and the unclassified members of the Proteobacteria constitites 16.41% of the total members at species level in the present study. Pseudomonas alcaligenes occurrs very rare and is involved in bioremediation of polluted sites [25]. Microorganisms such as alcaligenes sp induces beneficial response to plants when present in soil.…”

“…The positive role of Actinobacteria has been unequivocal for waste water treatment and heavy metal removal from the polluted sites (Wagner and Loy ; Ma et al . ). An increase in 5·7 and 3·1% bacterial OTUs for Firmicutes and Actinobacteria recorded in Bio‐ball treated water might be associated with water remediation.…”
