First of all, I would like to thank my supervisor Prof. Bjørn Tore Lunestad who introduced me to the exciting world of microbiology. I do not know how to express the gratitude I hold for the help and encouragement you have given during these years. You always have an answer for any of my questions, and I've now come to understand how well microbiology and your so called "pirkology" fits together. Thus, I'm still wondering how you can be ever so busy, and still always find the time to help out. A special thanks to my co-supervisor Dr. Arne Levsen for eminent help when designing experiments and writing papers. Thanks for good companionship during conferences and research cruises, and for trusting me with the research cruise leader position, even though you participated yourself. The phrase "Ingen kveis, ingen kos" have been appropriate in many occasions. I would also like to thank my other co-supervisor Dr. Jan Thomas Rosnes, for helpful feedback on my thesis. I would like to thank Prof. Øyvind Lie, Dr. Ingvild Eide Graff and Prof. Amund Måge for making this PhD possible, providing excellent work environment and laboratory facilities at NIFES. Thanks to all good colleagues at the Contaminants & Biohazard group, for help and support, and the nice atmosphere you all create. Thanks to Irja for problem solving coffee breaks, great conference company, and for reminding me to always keep an open mind. Thanks to Helge for great companionship at the office. Our more or less academic talks are highly appreciated. To all the ladies at "moleklyaer", thank you for eminent help during samplings, company at the lab, moving the Gel-Doc around, coffee breaks, lunches and life-prolonging laughs. A special thanks to the youthful and highly skilled ii ladies at the microlab, always being ready for action. Thanks to the research cruise group for your hard working effort off shore, even in bad weather. You all made these research cruises unforgettable. Thanks to my friends and family supporting me throughout these years. I look forward to finally have more time to spend with you all. Especially thanks to my mother, for always having the time to listen, for sharing your wisdom and for helping me to always find the open door. Thanks to my father who helped out early in the process-who knew that the interest for fish parasites was genetically dependant. Thanks to my sisters, Maria and Lisa, for your support and advices. Thanks for all the wine, the laughs and the good times. There are more times to come! Thanks to my incredibly patient husband Tormod, for all your effort the last months, running the house and taking care of our precious Sonja. Thank you for providing a L A T E X-hotline, helping me with the script and layout, even during work hours. A special thanks to dear Sonja, for always making me smile, and for entertaining and distracting me. Most important, thank you for being a sound sleeper.
