“…Evidence for Thiophenes in Virgin Gas Oil. Alkylthiophenes boiling in the gasoline and kerosine range have been shown definitely to be present in some crude oils (3,8) and indirect evidence from conventional mass spectrometry points to their presence in some light gas oils. Evidence is shown in Figure 6 for their presence in a monoaromatic fraction recovered by chromatography and distillation from the light gas oil region of West Texas crude oil.…”

“…Thiophene and the methylthiophenes have not been detected in Wasson crude oil. In Wilmington, Calif., crude oil, on the other hand, low-boiling alkane thiols and sulfides are not present in detectable amounts, but thiophene and the methylthiophenes are found (22). Again, lack of thermodynamic equilibrium in Wilimington crude is shown by the preponderance of 2-methylthiophene over the thermodynamically favored 3-methylthiophene.…”

“…distillate of the same crude oil is discussed herein. Although American Petroleum Institute Project 48 has identified thiophene and its two methyl homologs in another crude oil (7,10) and has ample evidence from mass spectrometry (6,8) that multiring thiophenes exist in Wasson crude oil, the benzo [6]thiophenes identified as described herein are the first definite compounds of this type that have been found during the Project's work with the Wasson oil.…”
