Identifying content to improve risk assessment communications within the Risk Profile: Literature reviews and focus groups with expert and non-expert stakeholders

Abstract: Objective To improve consumer decision making, the results of risk assessments on food, feed, consumer products or chemicals need to be communicated not only to experts but also to non-expert audiences. The present study draws on evidence from literature reviews and focus groups with diverse stakeholders to identify content to integrate into an existing risk assessment communication (Risk Profile). Methods A combination of rapid literature reviews and focus groups with experts (risk assessors (n = 15), risk … Show more

“…These guidelines could ultimately improve the important competence of physician-patient communication in the long term. To that end, we need even more studies that can make concrete suggestions on how to improve risk communication (as in [ 51 ]). In addition, medical students should be required to learn, as part of their studies, to convert statistical information in a patient-friendly way and create visualizations.…”

“…Risk communication takes place in three forms including care communication, consensus communication and crisis communication [ 80 ]. Regarding care communication, it is possible to refer to the communication after the food risk assessment that was done by the evaluators of this field; this affects the consumer's correct understanding of the risk and the consumer's decision regarding the use or non-use of the food in question [ 81 ]. Consensus communication which is about encouraging different groups and stakeholders to participate and work together for risk management [ 82 ].…”

“…Moreover, it has also been suggested that using adequate visualizations, which represent the risks in the given situation, increases the understanding of patients, which we call the visualization-strategy. From further research about communicating risks (which was not explicitly carried out in the context of Bayesian reasoning) it has additionally been shown that it is helpful to also interpret the concrete risk (e.g., 32%) within the context, for instance as a low, medium, or high risk (Ellermann et al, 2022). We call this the interpretationstrategy.…”
