“…As mentioned before, the only published study to apply elements of the L2MSS model to Italian L2, offering support for the notion of an ideal L2 self as a motivator to learn an L2 is Palmieri (2019). She found that for her Australian participants of non-Italian origins (mainly women aged between 60 and 69), the presence of the vibrant Italian community becomes the trigger for sentiments of belonging and for dynamics of identity (re)construction.…”

“…Our data therefore seem to support Amorati's (2019) findings of 'heritage motivations' underlying his participants' perceptions of Italian L2 competence as "fundamental for interacting with family members in Australia and/or overseas and for enhancing in-group membership" (p. 260). The hypothesis of a 'heritage-oriented' vision among our students defining Factor 3, however, is based on their love of Italian tradition rather than an expressed wish to 'belong' to the local Italian communitycontrasting, in a way, also with Palmieri's (2019) participants, whose wish to feel close to Italian people was a main motivational drive for studying Italian. This lack of the wish to participate in the life of the local community was a feature also common to Korean L2 students in Fraschini & Caruso (2019), suggesting that the attraction to cultural heritage and wish to belong to the local community do not necessarily go hand in hand.…”

“…Australian universities are witnessing a decrease in enrollments for second language (L2) courses (Martín et al, 2016). Beginner level L2 students, more than other groups of students, experience a drop in their motivation at a very early stage of their L2 learning process (Nettelbeck et al, 2007;Palmieri, 2019). This article reports on the findings of empirical research conducted to discover patterns behind student demotivation, following Thorner and Kikuchi's (2020) definition that "demotivation describes learners who were once motivated but have lost their motivation" (p. 368).…”
