Idiopathic Aplastic Anaemia in Children

Abstract: Summary The results of treatment of 19 children with idiopathic aplastic anaemia is reported. Initially the patients received testosterone‐prednisone therapy. When a satisfactory haemoglobin level had been reached metandienon was substituted for testosterone and the corticosteroids withheld. 8 patients died without signs of response, 2 patients responded initially but died later. The remaining 9 patients are alive but in only 3 of them was it possible to discontinue all therapy without signs of relapse. The ra… Show more

“…This finding, assumed to reflect two distinct disease categories, has led to attempts to subclassify patients at the begin of their disease by means of clinical fac tors, initial blood studies, or a combination of both. A rapid onset of disease and the presence of hemor rhagic symptoms is associated with diminished sur vival [4,5], as are low initial counts of neutrophils [4,6,7], platelets [4,6] or reticulocytes [2,4,6,8,9]. In our hands, an initial analysis of numbers of reticulo cytes proved impractical due to considerable day-today fluctuations.…”

“…They have been used in a variety of refractory anaemias with widely varying responses. The most impressive clinical use has been in idiopathic aplastic anaemias of children (Shahidi and Dia-mond, 1961;Killander et al, 1969). It was therefore decided to evaluate androgen therapy in the anaemia of long-term haemodialysis patients in the hope that an overall improvement in haemoglobin levels could be obtained.…”
