Idiopathic recurrent acute pancreatitis in the context of pancreas divisum: A case report

Abstract: Recurrent acute pancreatitis is characterized by frequent episodes of inflammation in the pancreas. The most common causes are alcohol abuse and gallstones but approximately 30% of cases are defined as idiopathic because initial evaluation fails to detect the etiology. In these patients, extensive laboratory and imaging evaluations usually lead to the uncovering of an occult biliary duct stone or sphincter of Oddi dysfunction as the main reason for frequent pancreatitis. We report a 42-year-old female with a l… Show more

“…18 To avoid recurrent pancreatitis attacks, patients should be advised to modify their lifestyle, which includes smoking cessation, moderation of alcohol consumption, and incorporation of a low-fat diet. 24 The patient population we studied received various treatments that were successful for at least 1 to 2 years postprocedure. The most superior was the sphincterotomy, which can be done either endoscopically or through surgery.…”

“…At present, there is some understanding of the clinical characteristics of RAP and the relationship between RAP and AP, but an insufficient understanding of the imaging characteristics for RAP itself. 2,[11][12][13][14] According to the 2012 revised Atlanta classification (RAC), 13 the need for late treatment is determined by the presence of symptoms and/or complications of AP, and the type of treatment is based on imaging of the pancreas and peripancreatic region as seen on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging and the presence of local complications. Morphologic data help guide treatment and must be added to the clinical criteria in the late stage.…”
