If China and Western Europe Are So Similar, Why Did China Not Have an Industrial Revolution?

Abstract: This contribution is intended to reinforce and extend Jack Goody's arguments against simplistic contrasts between East and West, citing other literature and findings made during my own fieldwork in Eastern France and China, with a particular view to asking whether (or why) China did not have an industrial revolution until the 1950s.
