IgE‐binding components of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) recognized by immunoblotting analysis. Simultaneous IgE binding to mannan and 46–48 kD allergens of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans

Abstract: The Saccharomyces cerevisiae allergens were characterized by IgE-immunoblotting with serum samples of 83 patients; 63 represented patients with atopic dermatitis with previous positive skin prick test or RAST for S. cerevisiae, seven patients with AD but negative test results and 13 were non-atopic controls. Disrupted whole body extract of S. cerevisiae was used in the assays. From the patients tested 41 patients with atopic dermatitis appeared positive in IgE immunoblotting revealing 22 IgE stained bands. Fro… Show more

“…It has also been found in the cell wall fraction and in the culture supernatant of C. albicans [29, 30]. It has been identified as a highly conserved allergens [23]in many fungal species including S. cerevisiae [31, 32], C. albicans [32, 33, 34], C. herbarum [25]and A. alternata [23, 25]. It appears to be the most important protein allergen of S. cerevisiae and C. albicans [31, 32, 33, 34].…”

“…Kortekangas-Savolainen et al have studied the SPT results to an extract of S. cerevisiae in 226 patients with AD, 50 patients with allergic rhinitis and/or asthma, and 173 nonatopic controls (81). A positive SPT result was seen in 94% of patients with severe AD, 76% of patients with moderate AD, and 25% of patients with mild AD.…”
