The IIB matrix model has been suggested as a particular formulation of nonperturbative superstring theory (M-theory). It has now been realized that an emerging classical spacetime may reside in its large-master field. This bosonic master field can, in principle, give rise to Minkowski and Robertson-Walker spacetimes. The outstanding task is to solve the bosonic master-field equation, which is essentially an algebraic equation. In this article, we present new results for the ( , ) = (10, 4) bosonic master-field equation of the IIB matrix model, where is the dimensionality and the matrix size. We also give, in a self-contained appendix, explicit results for critical points of the effective bosonic action. The main physics application of the (dimensionless) IIB matrix model may be in providing a (conformal) phase that replaces the Friedmann big bang singularity.

The type IIB matrix model, also known as the IKKT model, has been proposed as a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. Based on this proposal, various attempts have been made to explain how our four-dimensional space-time can emerge dynamically from superstring theory. In this article, we review the progress in numerical studies on the type IIB matrix model. We particularly focus on the most recent results for the Euclidean and Lorentzian versions, which are obtained using the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We also review the earlier results obtained using conventional Monte Carlo methods and clarify the relationship among different calculations.

Nonsingular bouncing cosmology in general relativity: physical analysis of the spacetime defect

In this paper, we describe physical effects occurring in the regularized Robertson–Walker spacetime which can reveal the presence of the defect. Our analysis is based on two main physical quantities: the compressive forces acting on (human) observers and the energy possessed by massive particles and photons during their dynamical evolution. In section , we claim that with a characteristic length scale of the order of the Planck length compressive forces become so intense near the defect that no (human) observer is able to cross it. In section , we show that the energy exhibits an unusual character over a small time interval around the bounce contrasting with the behaviour in the standard cosmology picture. We conclude the paper with some considerations and open problems related to our results.

IIB matrix model and regularized big bang

Abstract: The large-N master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model can, in principle, give rise to a particular degenerate metric relevant to a regularized big bang. The length parameter of this degenerate metric is then calculated in terms of the IIB-matrix-model length scale.
