“…Both, active self-assembly and molecular robotics, are clearly nanoscience, in being intellectually stimulating and not immediately applicable. But beyond the potential technological importance, engineering such systems provides us with the concepts and experiences needed to understand the diverse biological roles [100][101][102][103][104][105] of biomolecular motors in a systems context. 106…”

“…In the present excitotoxicity paradigm, we measured ADC decreases of the same order of magnitude as those that occur after brain ischemia (Albers, 1998 31 P-MRS demonstrated the absence of energy depletion during the ADC decrease, suggesting that a loss of energy-dependent cytoplasmic streaming is not a major determinant of diminished intracellular bulk water motion and decreased intracellular water ADC. It should be noted in this respect that Ca 2+ overload associated with NMDA-receptor overstimulation and opening of voltage-sensitive Ca 2+ channels can interfere with cytoplasmic circulation, independent of energy failure (Kamiya, 1984;Stearns, 1982). In a recent study using the Xenopus oocyte, however, it was shown that diffusion of ions, water, and several other small molecules was consistent with Brownian motion (Sehy et al, 2002).…”

“…In addition to the above mechanisms, overall displacements in the cytosol could be reduced as a result of diminished cytoplasmic streaming. It has been demonstrated that cytoplasmic streaming is halted at low ATP levels, low pH values, and elevated intracellular Ca 2 + concentrations (Kamiya, 1984), all of which can be direct consequences of cere bral ischemia or excitotoxicity. Finally, it should be stressed that the involvement of the above-mentioned factors in the intracellular diffusion changes is only speculative, as these structural and functional cytosolic alterations were not actually measured in this study.…”
