IL-13 Induces Skin Fibrosis in Atopic Dermatitis by Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin

Abstract: Skin fibrotic remodeling is a major feature in human atopic dermatitis (AD). Inflammation and tissue fibrosis are common consequences of Th2 responses. Elevated IL-13 and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) have been found in the AD skin lesions. Fibrocytes can be recruited to inflamed tissues to promote wound healing and fibrosis. Dermal transgenic expression of IL-13 causes an AD-like phenotype with fibrosis and increased TSLP. However, the role of TSLP in fibrotic remodeling is unknown. In this study, we in… Show more

“…Existing in the peripheral circulation, circulating fibrocytes can be recruited into multiple organs in response to chemokines, and actively contribute to fibrogenesis. It has been proved that circulating fibrocytes play a key role in pulmonary [6,31,32], renal [7,8], skin [7,33], hepatic [7,9] and cardiac [7,11] fibrosis. Consequently, it can be speculated that circulating fibrocytes could be one of the common targets for anti-fibrotic therapy in various organs.…”

“…An additional role of mast cells in wound healing might be related to IL-13, which is generally accepted as a T cell-related cytokine. T helper type 2 (Th2) cells are the major source of IL-13, and it activates tissue fibrosis in a variety of diseases by promoting collagen accumulation in fibroblasts and myofibroblasts and regulating inflammation [10][11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
