Ileal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor as a Rare Cause of Gastrointestinal Bleed: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature

Abstract: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare, slowly growing submucosal tumors in the gastrointestinal tract. Due to its indolent nature, GIST can go undetected for a long period of time. Symptomatic patients will typically develop abdominal pain, abdominal fullness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. However, most commonly and recognizable, patients will have blood in their stool due to rapid bleeding from the tumor. We report a case of a late diagnosis of GIST in the ileum with a favorable outcome.

“…Pleomorphic adenoma is usually seen in younger individuals (<40 years), and the palate is the commonest intraoral site [4,23]. The probability of the mass being a mucocele may be negated by the site and age of the patient (mucoceles are more likely to occur on the lower lip of children and young adults) and a chronic duration of 3.5 years.…”

“…The probability of the mass being a mucocele may be negated by the site and age of the patient (mucoceles are more likely to occur on the lower lip of children and young adults) and a chronic duration of 3.5 years. The possibility of salivary duct cysts is highly unlikely as they characteristically appear as bluish, firm nodular swellings on the floor of the mouth and rarely on the lips [23,24]. The diagnosis of a malignant minor salivary gland tumor (adenoid cystic carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma) may be ruled out based on the location, well-circumscribed mass, chronic duration, and lack of fixation [23,24].…”
