Ilha Grande, one of the locations with the most records of bat species (Mammalia, Chiroptera) in Rio de Janeiro state: results of a long-term ecological study

Abstract: Faunal inventories provide quantitative and qualitative data for different sites and are relevant sources of information for identifying areas of high species richness and endemism. Biological collections are important in this context for increasing the precision of species identification. The objectives of this study were to update the list of bat species of Ilha Grande by analyzing specimens in zoological collections as well as records obtained in areas where no such studies had been undertaken before; to co… Show more

“…The prey most reported by the studies we found are species considered common and abundant, having a wide geographic distribution and, consequently, end up being the most captured species in different regions (e.g., Eurillas latirostris for Kenya and Turdus leucomelas and Carollia perspicillata for Brazil- Giraudo et al, 2008;Tchoumbou et al, 2020;Costa et al, 2021). Birds were predated mainly by primates, passerine birds, and birds of prey, while marsupials and wild and domestic cats being the main predators of bats.…”

“…Despite the long history of collections in this region, which began with Vellozo's botanical expeditions at the end of the 18th century (Vellozo 1829), this species had the first known records just less than three decades ago. The new species here described was found not just in the mentioned urban parks, but also in the Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande, an important insular marine protected area about 70 km from the metropolitan region and that which houses some of the best‐preserved remnants of Atlantic Forest (Costa et al 2021).…”
