Illness perception in tuberculosis by implementation of the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire – a TBNET study

Abstract: How patients relate to the experience of their illness has a direct impact over their behavior. We aimed to assess illness perception in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) by means of the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ) in correlation with patients’ demographic features and clinical TB score. Our observational questionnaire based study included series of consecutive TB patients enrolled in several countries from October 2008 to January 2011 with 167 valid questionnaires analyzed. Each BIPQ … Show more

“…These findings add to the substantial and growing evidence base that allergies significantly impact patients’ QoL . Longer timeline perceptions have been reported in those with chronic illnesses such as asthma and diabetes compared with myocardial infarction and pulmonary tuberculosis . Similar findings were found by van der Velde et al in their study looking for Food Allergy QoL in food‐allergic adolescent and compared with their parent's perception showing timeline item the highest score followed by treatment control in both groups.…”

“…It has been used in studies of illness adaptation in patients with a wide range of conditions, including psychosis [Gómez-de-Regil, 2014], tuberculosis [Pesut et al, 2014], musculoskeletal disorders [Leysen et al, 2014], and others [Borge et al, 2014;Krauskopf et al, 2014]. The revised form of the IPQ (IPQ-R) was developed in New Zealand and England [Moss-Morris et al, 2002] in a sample of 711 patients with asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, acute pain, myocardial infarct, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS/HIV.…”

“…One way to examine illness perceptions in POAG would be to ask patients directly and subject the responses to qualitative analysis [7,11]. Alternatively, patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been used to quantify illness perceptions in chronic conditions [14,15]. Results from PROMs measuring illness perceptions have been linked to self-management behaviours, including attendence to follow-up appointments [16] and have also been shown to be related to decline in social and physical functioning [17,18] in a variety of conditions.…”
