Illustrated redescription of Haliplus (Liaphlus) arrowi Guignot, 1936 (Coleoptera: Haliplidae) from the Western Ghats, India, and notes on the closely related H. angustifrons Régimbart, 1892

Abstract: In an ongoing survey of aquatic beetles, the crawling water beetles Haliplus (Liaphlus) arrowi Guignot, 1936 and Haliplus (Liaphlus) angustifrons Régimbart, 1892 were found only from four (three localities for H. arrowi and one locality for H. angustifrons) out of 85 localities sampled in and around the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. Digital images and scanning electron micrographs of diagnostic characters are provided for the first time for both the species. Intraspecific and interspecific variation in the ely… Show more

“…C. hemani, M. sabitae and L. lambai in this study were found to be associated with the temporary habitats. The affinity of H. arrowi observed in the present study to perennial water bodies is in support with Hickman (1931), Hilsenhoff and Brigham (1978) and Sheth et al (2016). Haliplus immaculicollis and Haliplus longulus from Kendal pools in Ontario prefer temporary habitats to avoid risk of fish predation (Wiggins et al, 1980).…”

“… Haliplus angustifrons is widely distributed from south Asia to southeast Asia ( van Vondel 1993 ; Sheth et al 2016 ), but there are no records in east Asia. The pattern of dorsal marks, the shape of the prosternal process, and male genitalia are in agreement with the redescription of H. angustifrons ( van Vondel 1993 ).…”

“…Tonapi & Ozarkar (1969a,b) in their studies on aquatic beetles from the Pune region included water beetle species with brief descriptions and short notes on their ecology. Data on the family Haliplidae Aube, 1936 from Maharashtra is available (Sheth et al 2016). Additionally, Sheth et al (2018) revised the dytiscid genus Copelatus Erichson, 1832 with the discovery of three new species.…”

“…Here, for the first time, we are providing digital images of 59 species of aquatic beetles, collected from western Maharashtra. These exclude a total of 12 species as detailed information is already available for 10 species under the genera Eretes Laporte, 1833, Copelatus Erichson, 1832, and Haliplus Latreille 1802 (Sheth & Ghate 2014;Sheth et al 2016Sheth et al , 2018. Additionally, due to a lack of intact specimens, two species, namely Microdytes svensoni K.B.…”
