Image Restoration for University Leaders’ Public Health COVID-19 Response: A Case Study of Notre Dame

Abstract: Do as I say, not as I do is a common phrase that applies to the case of Notre Dame’s president as he began the Fall 2020 semester chastising students for gathering in large groups off campus leading to the spread of COVID-19 while he, just a month later, gathered unmasked in the U.S. White House Rose Garden to celebrate the nomination of a Notre Dame alum to the Supreme Court. This study draws upon image restoration strategies in crisis response literature to examine Notre Dame and its president’s public resp… Show more

“…For example, Johnson (2018) studied image repair strategies following political scandals and found the most successful efforts were denial and attacking accusers, while Benoit (2018b) studied image repair efforts in presidential debates, finding that the most common strategies were attacking accusers, simple denial, differentiation, and transcendence. Health-related image repair analyses often explore public communication about health issues, such as Spradley's (2020) analysis of university leaders communication about COVID-19, and health entities' responses to crises, such as Carmack's (2020) analysis of a hospital's image repair efforts after medical errors.…”

“…While first media mentions of a novel and particularly transmittable virus started circulating around the globe at the end of 2019 (World Health Organization, 2020;Taylor, 2021), it wasn't until 2020 that HEIs in Asia, Europe and the United States started taking measures to protect their campus communities and "flatten the curve" (Marsicano et al, 2020). Some of those measures included the cancelation of face-toface classes, evacuations of campus buildings and facilities, as well as a general hold on all in-person events (Spradley, 2020). HEIs and their leadership relied mainly on information from contagious disease experts and directives from leaders around the world, as they found themselves faced with an equally unpreceded and unpredictable crisis (Chronicle of Higher Education [CHE], 2020; New York Times [NYT], 2020; International Association of Universities [IAU], 2021; Smalley, 2021).…”
