Imagery rescripting and negative self-imagery in social anxiety disorder: a systematic literature review

Abstract: Background: Imagery rescripting (IR) is an effective intervention for social anxiety disorder (SAD) that targets memories of distressing formative events linked to negative self-imagery (NSI). IR is thought to update unhelpful schema by addressing the needs of the younger self within the memory. An accumulating body of evidence indicates that by modifying NSI, IR can significantly affect distressing imagery, memory appraisal, and beliefs about the self. “…In this respect, a powerful technique that seems particularly adequate to reprogram attachment dimensions -and somaticity, in particular -is imagery rescripting, consisting of evoking in one's mind an unresolved problematic autobiographical event and rescripting it by substituting the original helplessness experience with a new empowered one (Young et al, 2003;Arntz, 2012). The technique has been proven effective in reducing symptoms in a wide range of disorders, including SAD and EDs (Morina et al, 2017;Lloyd and Marczak, 2022).…”

“…By means of imagery rescripting (ImRs), key scenes can first be imaginatively relived and then imaginatively rewritten in a way that means both self-empowering and -soothing and thus coping for the younger self [Arntz and Weertman, 1999;Valente, 2021]. Overall, ImRs has been shown to be able to reduce both the distress associated with mental images and the dysfunctional beliefs they contain [Lloyd and Marczak, 2022].…”

“…Imagery rescripting (Arntz, 2012) involves altering the meaning of an image, which also changes associated emotions (Paulik et al, 2021). It appears effective across clinical presentations (Lloyd & Marczak, 2022; Maloney et al, 2019), though initially developed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Smucker et al, 1995). Within psychosis, prevalence of PTSD is an estimated 30% (Hardy & Mueser, 2017).…”
