Imaging Features of Pseudoaneurysms of the Hand in Children and Adults

Abstract: Awareness of the specific imaging appearances of pseudoaneurysms of the hand and their complications may improve the accuracy of radiologic diagnosis, advance the preoperative workup, and prevent possible clinical complications such as digital gangrene, nerve dysfunction, and aneurysm rupture.

“…En raison de la localisation anatomique de l'artère radiale : superficielle, cette artère est plus impliquée dans de telles pathologies. Seuls quelques cas de SMT ont été rapportés [2][3][4]. Dans la littérature, le SMH est plus largement décrit que le SMT.…”

“…Pseudoaneurysms generally result from a penetrating arterial injury, such as percutaneous catheterization, 1 multiple needle punctures, 3 gunshot and stab wounds, 1 and surgery. 4 Pseudoaneurysms are also associated with closed arterial injury as a result of blunt trauma, 1,5,6 with infection, 3,4 and with inflammation or congenital arterial defects. The majority of pseudoaneurysms are iatrogenic and occur as complications to interventional procedures, primarily percutaneous catheterizations.…”

“…1 The frequency of pseudoaneurysms is much lower in the upper extremities than in the lower extremities. 1 Pseudoaneurysms may develop as a complication of needle puncture at the wrist (puncture of the radial artery for blood gas sampling) 3,7 or at the elbow (venous puncture leading to brachial artery pseudoaneurysm) 6 or, rarely, venous pseudoaneurysm of an antecubital vein. 8 Blunt trauma may also lead to pseudoaneurysm, like in the hypothenar or thenar hammer syndrome.…”

“…3 The trauma may result in perivascular hematoma or thrombosis and segmental vessel occlusion with or without aneurysm. The primary site of vessel damage may also be a source of embolism in the digital arteries.…”
