Imaging features of spinal fractures in ankylosing spondylitis and the diagnostic value of different imaging methods

Abstract: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease with primary axial skeleton involvement. The main pathological changes include ossification of ligaments, disc annuli, and facet joints, which ultimately leads to spinal rigidity and changes to the spine's biomechanical stability. Also, AS is accompanied by varying degrees of osteopenia or osteoporosis, which further reduces the spine's stability, and even a minimal force can cause spinal fracture (1,2).

“…Recent medical literature shows a significant increase in the use of 3D imaging as a diagnostic tool in many clinical cases, including facial fractures (de Carvalho et al 2021 , Wickwire et al 2022 ), naso-orbital-ethmoid fractures (Onisor 2022 ), cervical fractures (Ren et al 2021 ) and orbital blowout fractures (Jansen et al 2018 ). Researchers have also used this technology to conduct virtual surgery on the scaphoid bone (Faudot et al 2021 ) while other studies have used it to scan the peri-orbital region for a very high clinical accuracy (Hollander et al 2021 ).…”

“…14 El movimiento continuo de los segmentos de la fractura conlleva complicaciones secundarias, como pseudoartrosis funcional. 15 En nuestro paciente es difícil precisar el tiempo de evolución de la fractura, pero, por las características de la pseudoartrosis y la historia del dolor crónico, deducimos que fue varios años atrás.…”

“…Over 80% of patients have a secondary decline in neurologic function when there is a delay in diagnosis ( 39 ). Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention in AS patients with cervical fractures may minimise the risk of complications ( 45 ). Similarly, Our results partially support this conclusion.…”
