Imaging features of the less common pancreatic masses

Abstract: Contrast-enhanced multiphase CT and dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR have been validated in the literature as outstanding modalities for the evaluation of pancreatic pathology. In addition to the more frequently seen pancreatic adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas and cystic lesions such as serous and mucinous cystadenomas and IPMNs, a variety of benign and malignant lesions may occur in the pancreas. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to review the imaging findings of a variety of uncommon,… Show more

“…It is difficult to diagnose a pancreatic tumor without a history of such diseases due to the lack of typical features of pancreatic plasmacytoma on CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other examinations. 1 There were only 7 case reports, including our present case, that did not have a history of multiple myeloma or related disease (Table 1 ). 2 7 The present patient was oldest.…”

“…However in the present case, multiphase contrast-enhanced CT revealed solid masses with homogenous enhancement in the arterial phase. Although Hammond et al 1 reviewed the several case reports and proposed that the most typical finding of pancreatic plasmacytoma on CT might be the presence of a focal multilobulated mass with homogeneous contrast enhancement, the features of pancreatic plasmacytoma on multiphase contrast-enhancement CT have not been established. Further analysis with the accumulation of cases of pancreatic plasmacytoma will clarify the characteristic findings of pancreatic plasmacytoma on CT, MRI, and other examinations.…”

“…On imaging both masses were hypo-enhancing with the larger lesion having evidence of necrosis. These features have been previously documented in ACC, with the presence of necrosis usually seen in larger lesions while smaller lesions are usually more solid in appearance (18,19). Primary ACCs most frequently metastasizes to the liver, therefore it is important to clearly establish that the liver lesions are not representative of metastatic disease from a pancreas ACC (1).…”

“…In 2006, Hois et al 7 analyzed 6000 CT scans and identified pancreatic lipomas in 5 of them (0.083%). In 2013, Hammond et al 8 also described a variety of uncommon benign and malignant pancreatic neoplasms. Recently, in 2014, Gossner et al 9 retrospectively reviewed 100 abdominal CT scans, of which 6 had pancreatic lipomas (6%).…”
