Imaging findings in renal hydatid disease

Abstract: The aim of this work is to describe the image findings of renal hydatid disease, especially on MR. Four cases of echinococcal involvement of the kidney were retrospectively reviewed. All patients had intravenous urography (IVU) and US performed. Computed tomography examination was available in three patients and MR in two cases. Intravenous urography demonstrated communication of the cyst to the collecting system in one case. Ultrasound revealed multicystic appearance in three cases and unilocular in one case.… Show more

“…1 Magnetic resonance imaging also provides valuable information for diagnosis and a clear evalution of cyst extension and tissue involvement. 10 In conclusion, although retroperitoneal and seminal vesicle locations of a hydatid cyst are rare, hydatid disease should be considered when cystic masses in retrovesical and seminal vesicle are observed in a patient living in an endemic area.…”

“…The objective is to remove all infective elements with no contamination or spillage and the goal of surgery is total cyst excision without spillage or contamination of the operative field (Figure 4) [1,12] Whenever possible, the cyst should be excised, if necessary, along with some normal tissue such as partial nephrectomy or nephron-sparing pericystectomy [1,[70][71][72]. Nephrectomy is reserved for destroyed kidneys ( Figure 5) [70].…”

“…11 MRI is an alternative to CT scan which can detects solitary or multiple cystic lesion surrounded by thin hypointense rim. 12 Oral Albendazole as medical treatment is given in the dose of 10 mg/kg/day for 28 days followed by 2 weeks interval. Three cycle of this scheme is followed.…”
