Imaging of the pancreatic duct by linear endoscopic ultrasound

Abstract: The current gold standard investigation for anatomic exploration of the pancreatic duct (PD) is endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is a noninvasive method for exploration of the PD. A comprehensive evaluation of the course of PD and its branches has not been described by endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). In this article, we describe the techniques of imaging of PD using linear EUS.

“…Tumors were staged according to the TNM classification. All EUS procedures were performed using a Fujifilm EG-530UT and EG-530UT2 convex array echoendoscope (FUJIFILM Medical Systems, Wayne, NJ, USA) 16 . EUS determined whether the tumor was limited to the sphincter (uT1) or invading the duodenal wall (uT2) ( Table 1 and Fig.…”

“…Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is the best imaging modality for investigation of the papillary region and biliopancreatic confluence. The TN staging of papillary tumors is effective and, along with the investigation of the common bile duct (CBD) and the main pancreatic duct (MPD), reinforces the indication for EP by accurately showing that the tumor is confined to the papilla [13][14][15][16][17] . The present study was therefore designed to evaluate factors associated with the occurrence of AP in a controlled group of patients with tumors of the DP subjected to EP.…”

“…Endoscopic US (EUS) has gained importance, and detailed knowledge has been published. [ 14 15 16 17 ] Comparatively, little is known about the use of contrast-enhanced EUS (CE-EUS). [ 18 19 20 21 22 ] The first pilot study performed in 2003 described an experimental technique of CE-EUS based on a linear prototype EUS scope, using a low mechanical index (MI) (0.09–0.25) and a second-generation contrast agent (SonoVue ® ), which allowed the visualization of early arterial phase and late parenchymal phase enhancement of the pancreas.…”

“…Although USG is considered the gold standard for GB imaging, in view of providing high resolution images; EUS has been found to be better than USG for GB lesions imaging[ 3 - 6 ]. Different techniques of imaging by EUS have been described by different authors for GB imaging but a standardized technique has not been mentioned[ 7 - 10 ]. In view of close proximity of GB to the duodenum, usually EUS imaging is restricted to duodenum[ 11 ].…”
