Imazethapyr, Alone or with Other Herbicides for Weed Control During Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) Establishment

Abstract: During the establishment of alfalfa, POST applications of imazethapyr at 50 g/ha, following PPI applications of trifluralin at 1,100 g/ha, consistently provided ≥ 80% control of wild oat, volunteer canola, and shepherd's-purse with no crop injury. POST applications of the same rate of imazethapyr without PPI applications of trifluralin provided similar volunteer canola and shepherd's-purse control, but ≥ 80% wild oat control was achieved only 25% of the time. Imazethapyr, alone or following trifluralin, did no… Show more

“…All treatments containing oat (oat for silage, oat for grain, oat residue mulch, and oat treated with sethoxydim) had broadleaf weed densities similar to that of alfalfa treated with imazethapyr. Imazethapyr has been demonstrated to provide effective control of many annual broadleaf weeds and some annual grass weeds during alfalfa establishment (Darwent et al, 1997; Zollinger and Meyer, 1996).…”

“…Two major periods when weeds are the greatest concern in alfalfa are during seedling establishment and as the stand thins near the end of the production cycle. Weed control options during seedling establishment include 2,4‐DB (4), imazethapyr (7), and others (5). A small grain companion crop is sometimes used to facilitate alfalfa establishment (7).…”

“…In seedling Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa), trifluralin pre-plant incorporated (1.1 kg ha -1 ) followed by bentazon (1.1 kg ha -1 ), and imazethapyr + sethoxydim (0.025 kg ha -1 + 0.2 kg ha -1 ) killed 90 and 80% of S. vulgaris plants, respectively, at the four-to six-leaf stage (Darwent et al 1997). Rogers-Langille (1997) reported dramatic improvement of kill of S. vulgaris, from 14 to 87% mortality, when fluazifop-P (0.150 kg ha -1 ) was included in a tank-mix with terbacil (0.06 kg ha -1 ).…”
