Weed control is one of the factors that impact alfalfa producers, with negative effects on quality often in the year of establishment. Glyphosate is a broad‐spectrum herbicide that controls many troublesome annual and perennial weeds, and new cultivars that are tolerant of glyphosate application have been developed. The crop response of glyphosate on these new varieties has not been reported. This research examined alfalfa tolerance under field conditions, and high rates were used to challenge the plants to determine the level of safety. Postemergent glyphosate treatments ranging from 0.75 to 3 lb a.e./acre sprayed before each of four alfalfa harvests had no meaningful crop injury in the establishment year or in the subsequent two years. The high glyphosate dose of 9 lb a.e./acre over a 3‐year period caused no reduction in alfalfa yield or nutritive value at any cutting in any of the three years.

Territories. High fecundity, rapid wind dispersal, continuous germination under a wide range of growing conditions, rapid growth rate, ability to set seed a number of times per growing season and lack of chemical control options has made this species an important weed of some horticultural crops. This species produces pyrrolizidine alkaloids that have been implicated as a cause of liver toxicity in livestock. Populations of S. vulgaris have displayed resistance to Group 5, 6 and 7 herbicides (triazines, uracils, substituted ureas and nitriles) and other photosynthetic-transport-inhibiting herbicides. Triazine resistance in S. vulgaris was the first reported case of herbicide resistance worldwide. A rust pathogen, Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke, is currently being evaluated for control of S. vulgaris in Europe. L'espèce est devenue une importante adventice dans certaines cultures horticoles à cause de sa grande fertilité, de la dispersion rapide de ses graines par le vent, de son pouvoir de germination dans maintes conditions, de sa croissance accélérée, de sa capacité à produire plusieurs fois des semences pendant la saison végétative et du manque de moyens de lutte chimiques. L'espèce synthétise les alcaloïdes de la pyrrolizidine à l'origine de problèmes d'intoxication du foie chez les bovins. Les peuplements de S. vulgaris résistent aux herbicides des groupes 5, 6 et 7 (triazines, uracils, substituts de l'urée et des nitriles) et à d'autres désherbants qui inhibent le transport actif et la photosynthèse. La résistance de S. vulgaris à la triazine est le premier cas de résistance à un herbicide à avoir été signalé dans le monde. En Europe, on évalue actuellement l'utilité de la rouille Puccinia lagenophorae Cooke dans la lutte contre cette adventice.
