Imbalance of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP) – 1 and – 4 serum levels, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Background: Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) play a key role in tissue degradation and remodeling. Since chronic inflammation is associated with tissue remodeling in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), we evaluated serum TIMP-1 and TIMP-4 levels in IBD patients, in comparison with healthy controls (HC).

“…Our results suggest that not only MMP-9 but also TIMP-1 could be a useful additional biomarker in IBD. Taken together, our data, which are consistent with others, suggest that the imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs can determine the degree of mucosal damage in IBD [44,45,46,47,48,49]. …”

“…In the inflamed mucosa of patient with IBD, TIMP expression inversely correlates with the production of proinflammatory cytokines and with the grade of inflammation. The sensitive balance between MMPs and TIMPs is essential for many physiological processes of the gut [44,45,46,47,48,49]. …”

“…The authors claim that validation of the obtained results may provide a greater understanding of colon cancer liver metastasis [76]. Nevertheless, the perturbation of the TIMP-1 level is common for most inflammatory diseases and as inflammatory factors play a major role in mediating tumourigenesis, its fluctuating level does not seem to be a unique marker for liver metastasis [77][78][79][80]. On the other hand, monitoring the level of TIMP-1 can be a useful tool for monitoring disease progression.…”

“…Several MMPs have been reported to be increased in the gut mucosa of patients with IBD [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Thus, we hypothesize that genetically encoded variation between individuals in MMP production may therefore contribute to disease onset, type or severity.…”
