Immersion in 6-Benzylaminopurine for Dormancy Release and Initiation of Potato Sprouts at Various Tuber Weight and Storage Duration

Abstract: One of the main obstacles in providing quality potato seed tubers is the long dormancy period of the potato seeds. A study that explores this has been carried out to elucidate the response of dormancy release and initiation of potato sprouts to the differences in tuber weight and storage duration before immersion in cytokinin (6-benzylaminopurine). The study was conducted at the seed warehouse UPT Horticulture Parent Seed Kutagadung Berastagi, Department of Food and Horticulture of North Sumatra Province, from… Show more

“…In the present investigation, sprouts began to emerge after week 8; that is, a latency period was observed, unlike what has been reported by other authors (Melo et al, 2021;Siregar et al, 2021). Torres et al (2011) state that this period lasts between 2 and 14 wk.…”

“…Melo et al (2021) reported germination percentages of 65%-94% and an average number of sprouts per potato of 3-11 depending on the genotype used over a period of 4 wk. On the other hand, Siregar et al (2021) obtained 91.67% germination, with an average number of sprouts per potato of 1.79 at 5 wk.…”

“…An abrupt increase in the concentration of endogenous zeatin (naturally occurring CK) and a reduction in ABA at the onset of dormancy breakage have been observed [21]. Both natural (such as zeatin) and synthetic CK (such as kinetin and 6-benzyladenine) applications can rapidly trigger tuber sprouting [22,23]. GA and CK were reported to act synergistically to accelerate sprouting (reviewed by Kolachevskaya et al) [24].…”
