Immersion in an emergency department triage center during the Covid-19 outbreak: first report of the Liège University hospital experience

Abstract: Objectives: Since the beginning of the novel coronavirus outbreak, different strategies have been explored to stem the spread of the disease and appropriately manage patient flow. Triage, an effective solution proposed in disaster medicine, also works well to manage Emergency Department (ED) flow. The aim of this study was to describe the role of an ED Triage Center for patients with suspected novel coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and characterize the patient flow. Methods: In March 2020, we established a Covid… Show more

“…This was made even more challenging by the fact that pediatric patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection seem to present with mild, nonspecific symptoms [1][2][3][4], with epidemiological risk factors (especially the familial context) being of paramount importance to identify affected children [1]. Another important factor influencing emergency care has been the limited possibility of primary care facilities to perform physical evaluation in subjects with febrile or respiratory conditions, due to the lack of appropriate protection equipment and dedicated spaces [5].…”

“…During the study period, all patients directed to the triage centers were eligible to be included. Pediatric patients (age <16 years old) were excluded because the university centers created a specific pediatric ward with particular procedures [12].…”

“…At the end of 2020, due to the high morbidity of SARS-CoV-2 at world level (ffi 84 millions of people including ffi 0.65 million in Belgium; https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/), the severity of clinical presentation in patients (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and the limited laboratory diagnostic capacities, emergency departments (EDs) have been overwhelmed by the flow of COVID-19 suspected patients in the pandemic context [12]. Moreover, the use of dedicated triage centers is known to offer a management option in disaster situations [13].…”

“…Establishment of triage center for filtration of COVID suspected patients can effectively reduce the probability of corona virus transmission and cause safer diversion of Covid patients to specific hospital department [25,26]. INOR has also followed the policy of not entertaining the COVID-19 to minimize the probability of virus spread to other patients and hospital staff.…”
