Immobilization and assessment of heavy metals in chicken manure compost amended with rice straw-derived biochar

Abstract: In this study, a 30-days laboratory experiment was implemented to investigate the impact of additive biochar on the stabilization of heavy metals in chicken manure compost. Results showed that after the addition of rice straw-derived biochar, heavy metals were more stabilized except Cu, of which the residual fractions distinctly decreased due to the interaction with organic functional groups from biochar. Given the bioavailability of heavy metals, the biochar addition at a 10% proportion decreased the concentr… Show more

“…The high levels of these metals should be contributed by the background of CM and CG carbon. 24,26 Generally, the concentrations of the heavy metals were remarkably lower than European threshold values for sewage sludge application (40 mg/kg for Cd, 1200 mg/kg for Pb, 400 mg/kg for Ni, 1750 mg/kg for Cu, and 1500 mg/kg for Cr) and below the concentration limits for biochar set by International Biochar Initiative (IBI) (1.4−39 mg/kg Cd, 93−1200 mg/kg Cr, 143−6000 mg/kg Cu, 121−300 mg/kg Pb, 47−420 mg/kg Ni and 418−7400 mg/kg Zn). 31−33 Using these criteria, all the CMW and CGW biochars can qualify as soil enhancers or concentrated chemical fertilizers.…”

“…On the other hand, nearly 3.2 × 10 9 tons of livestock and poultry manure are produced annually from animal husbandry in China . The management and settlement of spent coffee grounds and livestock manure have become of increasing concern. Herein, we chose spent coffee ground and chicken manure as feedstocks to treat waste acids. After impregnation of the biomass precursors in waste acids, H 3 PO 4 was stored in biomass.…”

“…The biochar is characterized by numerous surface functional groups such as carbonyl groups, carboxyl, and phenolic hydroxyls, in addition to a well-defined porous structure. These attributes possess the capacity to improve ion exchange processes on the biochar surface and reduce the bioavailability of heavy metals (Li et al 2021;Mohamed et al 2017). The charge properties of these characteristics facilitate interactions between various functional groups and the surfaces of heavy metals, resulting in internal spherical complexation with the available hydroxyl groups of mineral oxides and other surface precipitates, consequently impacting the adsorption efficacy (Puga et al 2015).…”

“…( 2) Indirect interaction. The elevation of soil pH through the utilization of biochar and the subsequent liberation of dissolved organic carbon have been found to enhance the adsorption and precipitation of heavy metals in forms such as phosphates, carbonates, oxides, and hydroxides, ultimately diminishing their bioavailability via adsorption and/or precipitation reactions (Beesley et al 2011;Li et al 2021;Zeng et al 2015). Furthermore, the composite nature of biochar, encompassing both mineral and organic constituents, imparts a substantial binding capacity for heavy metals and furnishes supplementary sites for adsorption (Uchimiya et al 2010).…”

“…Aided phytostabilisation can be a solution to reduce the mobility of trace elements (Pb, Cd, Zn) in the soil. Various reports consider different organic [ 27 , 28 ] and mineral additives [ 29 , 30 , 31 ] with and without plants to reduce the mobility of these elements in the soil. One of the most studied is biochar of different origins [ 32 , 33 , 34 ].…”
