Immune monitoring for precision medicine in allergy and asthma

Abstract: “Precision Medicine” embodies the analyses of extensive data collected from patients and their environments to identify and apply patient-specific prophylactic strategies and medical treatments to improve clinical outcomes and healthcare cost-effectiveness. Many new methods have been developed for evaluating the activity of the human immune system. Such “immune monitoring” approaches are now being used in studies of allergy and asthma in the hope of identifying better correlates of disease status, predictors o… Show more

“…It will also complement currently available tools aimed at developing personalized or precision medicinal approaches for the diagnosis, management, and treatment monitoring of allergic disease. 11 The platform was exploited to identify development of recognition of linear epitopes by IgG, IgG 4 , and IgE in serum/plasma during 3 years of AIT against birch and grass pollen allergy.…”

“…13,112 The "omics" revolution is based on platform technologies in genomics (by far the most robust), metabolomics, proteomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, lipidomics, and microbiomics to generate vast global datasets, and advanced bioinformatics to interrogate and interpret the datasets using machine learning and artificial intelligence (Figure 4). 113 Such analysis of population-based datasets can reveal novel insights to underpin therapeutic selection from an expanded range of precise biologicals. 114 Examples are emerging from patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) in whom the genetically defined defect can be specifically targeted with therapeutics.…”

“…While asthma control has typically been evaluated on the basis of symptoms, lung function and exacerbations, it was noted that measures beyond forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), such as airway inflammatory markers, immune monitoring, clinical and functional assessments, quality of life and the association between sputum cell counts and exacerbations, may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the response to treatment [54][55][56].…”
