Immune system changes after sexual abuse in adolescents

Abstract: The increase in some immune system parameters and the decrease in several others, suggests a dysregulation of the immune system related to trauma in adolescents. Dysregulation of the immune system is known to cause autoimmune and chronic disease.

“…While women and men in Canada self‐report similar rates of physical IPV, women are more likely than men to report multiple victimizations, including sexual IPV . The body's stress response to violence can have long‐term consequences on the immune system . Furthermore, experiencing violence may contribute to the uptake of maladaptive coping mechanisms such as smoking and alcohol abuse, which further contribute to health adversities .…”

“…Contingent and appropriate responses from the infant's primary caregiver are crucial in facilitating CNS development, and the more interpersonally attuned right hemisphere shows a more accelerated growth during the late fetal and early postnatal periods [ 5 , 6 ]. Attunement to the child also informs how he or she will internalize the model for social interactions; early life neglect and abuse can lead to a plethora of psychiatric and somatic conditions, including growth delays, immune dysregulation, low levels of oxytocin, and impairment in social reciprocity [ 7 10 ]. Thus, the “psychobiologically attuned caregiver” has a pivotal role in regulating an infant's brain development [ 11 ].…”

“…The articles presented in this review evaluated sexual abuse as an independent variable alone or a subtype of childhood maltreatment (CM), in this case the authors investigated other types of abuse besides CSA, making correlations between the inflammatory markers and each type of abuse, including CSA. Only two studies evaluated exclusively CSA ( 37 , 48 ), other two data investigated physical and sexual abuse ( 38 , 51 ), the remain 13 studies evaluated all subtypes of maltreatment and the correlation of each subtype, and CM global scores, to immune system alterations ( 39 47 , 49 , 50 , 52 , 53 ).…”

“…Ayaydin et al ( 37 ) used the PTSD module of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) to detect psychological effects of trauma. K-SADS-PL is a semi-structured questionnaire responsible for assessing recent and past diagnosis of children and adolescents following DSM-IV criteria ( 37 ).…”
