Immunity to Bovine Herpesvirus 1: I. Viral lifecycle and innate immunity

Abstract: Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) causes a variety of diseases and is globally distributed. It infects via mucosal epithelium, leading to rapid lytic replication and latent infection, primarily in sensory ganglia. Large amounts of virus can be excreted by the host on primary infection or upon recrudescence of latent infection, resulting in disease spread. The bovine immune response to BHV-1 is rapid, robust, balanced, and long-lasting. The innate immune system is the first to respond to the infection, with type I i… Show more

“…The structural models obtained are all similar to each other (Fig. 3a), and also to previously reported BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 models (Levings and Roth, 2013). The only exception is a region of domain II, enriched in proline residues, which is absent in the template structure and had to be reconstructed (Fig3a).…”

“…The bovine complement system [126] has been widely studied, including in immune defences against bovine anaplasmosis [127], in relation to heat-stress in dairy cows [128], susceptibility to bacterial infection relating to copper-deficiency [129]. Roles for modulation of complement regulation in relation to poxviral and pestiviral infections have been identified [130][131][132], including immune evasion by bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) [133], while and roles for antibody-dependent complement-mediated killing of mycoplasma have recently been revealed [134]. The finding of deiminated complement components highlight hitherto understudied roles for post-translational deimination in the known diversity of complement function throughout phylogeny [135][136][137][138][139].…”

“…The herpesvirus particle is composed of a capsid containing the double-stranded DNA genome, which is surrounded by a tegument layer and an envelope containing viral glycoproteins (1). During the herpesvirus life cycle, genome synthesis, capsid assembly, DNA incorporation (2), and primary tegumentation (3) occur in the nuclei of infected cells.…”
