Immunoadjuvant properties of glove cornstarch powder in latex‐induced hypersensitivity

Abstract: Our findings show that cornstarch powder increases antigen-induced bronchoconstriction and antibody production. This role of immunoadjuvant is not antigen-specific. The cornstarch powder used as donning agent in latex gloves is an allergen carrier and it can enhance latex-induced hypersensitivity.

“…Cornstarch powder, an inert substance added to gloves to facilitate donning and removal, has been documented to serve as a carrier for the allergenic NRL proteins and acts as an immunoadjuvant for latex allergy (5,26,29,45,77). Perspiration increases the solubilization and leaching of NRL proteins and their binding to cornstarch particles, leading to increased potential for sensitization (1,5,29).…”

“…Latex‐related occupational bronchial asthma is estimated to affect 2.5% of exposed health care and manufacturing workers (1,36,84). The preponderance of latex‐associated respiratory illness appears to be linked to the use of powdered latex gloves (1,7,77,85). Some affected individuals continue to experience asthmatic symptoms even without contact with NRL devices (29).…”

“…Endotoxin activity was evaluated in VCSp and NRL‐CSp using the kinetic chromogenic quantitative Limulus amoebocyte lysate assay (Bio Whittaker Europe SPRL, Verviers, Belgium) according to the European Pharmacopoeia. Endotoxin content was 1.3 ng/g of cornstarch for VCSp and 324 ng/g for NRL‐CSp [15].…”

“…In a previous report, we had demonstrated that CSp acts as an immunoadjuvant in guinea‐pigs sensitized to NRL by the peritoneal route [15]. In the present study, our aim was to test the hypothesis that CSp could potentiate the immunogenicity of NRL through breathing latex‐bearing CSp.…”

“…This view was confirmed in prospective studies showing that NRL is the major contributor to latex aeroallergen in operating rooms (11). Possibly, cornstarch acts as a non‐antigen‐specific adjuvant (12). Furthermore, risk groups for latex allergy were identified (13, 14).…”
